Julia

I come out of the backroom and put my best smile on my face.

“Nancy!” I say, drawing the attention of my boss and the owner of the store. She’s been talking to the man that wanted the Vikings shirt. Talking and smiling but when she turns about that smile falters and fades and disappears altogether, replaced by a frown.

“Julia…where were you?”

It’s more a statement than a question. I keep the smile glued to my face.

“Why, just in the back…helping this gentleman.” I turn to him then. “What size did you say you wanted, sir? So far I’m only seeing smalls and mediums.”

“Oh, uh…well, I’ll take a large.”

I glance back at Nancy. “I’ll have to go check and–”

“No, dear,” Nancy says, putting her hand up, “ I’ll go.” Then she starts to move past me.

“Um, wait!” I say, putting my hand on her shoulder – something I’ve never done before. She turns her head slowly, casts her eyes to my hand, looks at it like it’s some foreign insect that has to be killed.

“Y-e-ssssss?” she hisses.

“Well, um…it’s real messy back there and–”

“And I’m sure I’ve seen worse,” she says, moving forward once again, my hand slipping from her shoulder, “I did open this store, after all.”

Oh, shit! If she heads back there she’s gonna see Shane. And I never told him to get dressed. I’m sure he’s smart enough to figure it out, but still…if she spots him back there, I’ll be out of a job, I just know it, I know her…oh, shit!

“Wait!” I shout out again, and once again Nancy turns.

“What is it this time?”

“I-I…I forgot to tell you.”

“Tell me what?”

“Tell you about the…the shoplifting.”

Her eyes go wide. “The what? ”

I nod. “Uh-huh. Shoplifters. Some young kids, just before you got here. Mall security is after them.”

She puts her hands on her hips. “Well, I never.” Then she shakes her head, looks up at the ceiling. “I pay good money to rent this space – I expect safety!” And without another word she turns on her heel and storms off, toward the door and then out it. I’m sure she’s heading to the mall security office now. I might have bought myself some time but also might have created more troubles for myself later.

But later will have to wait.

I turn back to the customer, who by this point is tapping his foot and glancing at his watch. “I’ll be just one minute longer,” I say.

“Oh, al-right .”

I smile and turn and rush back to the storeroom. When I get there, Shane is in his pants again and about to pull his shirt on. He ducks down as I appear, then visibly relaxes when he sees it’s me.

“Whew…I heard her out there,” he says.

I nod. “She’s gone now. We can finish.”

“R-really?”

“Uh-huh,” I say, coming up to him and putting my hands on his chest and moving them down. A smile spreads across his face and he tosses his shirt down to the floor and takes me in his arms.

We get right back into it.
